About SGMS

Our Mission

The practice of Geriatric Medicine was formally introduced in Singapore in 1987 and had started with only a handful of Geriatric Medicine trainees who were sent to Scotland in the late 1980s to learn the intricacies of Geriatric Medicine.

The Society for Geriatric Medicine (Singapore) (SGMS) was officially registered on 24th October 1996 with the following objectives:

To promote and maintain standards of Geriatric Medicine and care of older adults.

To promote the development of comprehensive geriatric services.

To promote research in Geriatric Medicine and care of older adults.

To promote undergraduate and post-graduate training in Geriatric Medicine.

Till date, over 100 clinicians with a special interest in caring for older adults including geriatricians and trainees in Geriatric Medicine are part of SGMS and they continue to provide care for Singapore’s rapidly ageing population.

Celebrating 35 Years of Geriatric Medicine in Singapore

In 2023, we collaborated with the Institute of Geriatrics and Active Ageing to produce a video celebrating 35 years of geriatric medicine in Singapore. Through this video, we illustrated how our specialty has grown over the years, with members of our fraternity sharing about our hopes for the future.
