Dr Matthew Chen

President of Society for Geriatric Medicine, Singapore (SGMS)

President’s Message

Dear Friends and Colleagues,

It has been an honour and privilege for me and my colleagues to serve as the Executive Committee in the Society for Geriatric Medicine, Singapore (SGMS).

With the world’s population rapidly ageing, the need for comprehensive and holistic care of older people has become increasingly relevant over time. Since its inception in 1996, SGMS has been the point of convergence for all who are passionate about the practice of geriatric medicine. Apart from geriatricians, our broad membership base includes those from family medicine and surgery, and ranges from residents to resident physicians to specialists practising in both public and private sectors. Together we are dedicated to promote and advocate for geriatric medicine and the care of older adults.

This is very much reflected in the work that we do, which includes hosting highly successful academic conferences such as the Asia Pacific Geriatric Conference (APGC) in 2016, and most recently, the 9th Asian Conference for Frailty and Sarcopenia (ACFS) in 2023. We collaborate closely with other entities such as the Chapter of Geriatricians, College of Physicians, Academy of Medicine, Osteoporosis Society (Singapore) (OSS), Singapore Society of Anaesthesiologists (SSA), Geriatric Surgery Society of Singapore (GSSS), and Geriatric Education Research Institute (GERI) to organise events including the Evidence-Based Perioperative Medicine (Asia) EBPOM-ASIA conferences in 2019 and 2022, and webinars such as the Knowledge-to-Practice Series (KPS), just to name a few.

The scope of our work extends beyond organising events, as we actively collaborate every year with the Division of Graduate Medical Studies (DGMS), NUS Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, to offer the Graduate Diploma in Geriatric Medicine [GDip (Geri Med)] Programme.

I hope this website gives you a brief glimpse into the work we do and encourage you to join us on this mission to improve the lives of older adults in Singapore and beyond.
